Who is Leila De Lima?

De Lima is a Philippine politician and a practicing lawyer. Her complete name is Leila Norma Eulalia Josefa Magistrado De Lima. She recently won a seat in the Senatorial race during the 2016 Philippine elections that took place on May 9, 2016. She will be serving the public as a senator for at least six years from 2016 to 2022.

Senator De Lima was appointed by former president Benigno Aquino III as the Secretary of Philippine Justice from June 30, 2010 to October 12, 2015. She is now succeeded by Alfredo Caguioa.

De Lima was appointed by Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as the chairperson of the Philippine Commission on Human Rights. She served from May 2008 to June 30, 2010. This particular professional background made her a prominent fighter against human rights abuse made by public officials.

She served as a Supreme Court Associate Justice legal staff to Justice Isagani Cruz in 1986 to 1989. De Lima also served as a junior associate from 1991 to 1993.
