Prior to winning Miss Universe 2015, Pia is a known celebrity in the Philippines. When she attended her secondary education in ABS-CBN Distance learning school in the city of Quezon, she was then noticed by the talent directors of ABS-CBN television station and started invited her to participate in several commercials, television shows, and various movies. Since then, she has become a local celebrity in her country and used her popularity to become the breadwinner of their family until the present day.

She joined as a contestant for the most prestigious national beauty pageant in the Philippines known as the Binibining Pilipinas. Her first attempt clinched the 2nd runner-up position. On her second attempt, she only reached the semi-finalist spot. The eventually won the title for Miss Universe Philippines on her third attempt.

She is also a writer for a local newspaper in the Philippines, known as Inquirer, writing beauty and cosmetic products. Pia finished her culinary degree at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies in Manila.

Steve Harvey made a brave admission from his horrible mistake at the pageant that overshadowed the whole pageant of the night. He has been criticized for being overly excited to announce the wrong winner, which is Miss Colombia. However, there are also criticisms that the host intentionally committed the mistake in order to create a huge fame for the new handlers of the Miss Universe and Miss USA beauty pageant.
